Lola & Shorty Huber

“We met when his best friend came to pick up my best friend!” Lola said. “Shorty insisted on giving me a ride downtown, but come to find out he just had a car with one seat so I rode on his lap. I guess I made a good impression!”

The Hubers have lived life with a zest for fun that started from the very beginning. “When he asked me to go out that night, I responded, ‘If you’ve got the money, honey, I’ve got the time!’” Lola said. “It was a really popular song at the time,” Shorty said, “And I just stopped and thought to myself, ‘Who is this girl?’”

Shorty insists that the fun comes from Lola. “When we first got married I could hardly figure out what to say to people, but she’s never met a stranger,” said Shorty. “She helped loosen me up.”

The Hubers spent a great deal of time with their children. So much so that their daughters didn’t want to leave home because they’d miss all the fun, and Shorty has never been at a loss for ways to get his point across in a fun, but meaningful way. Daughter Carol writes, “I kept putting off completing a correspondence course that I needed for college graduation. Then I received something in the mail from Dad – it was my obituary! It stated that my ‘life-long dream never came true because I never completed my correspondence course.’ Needless to say, I graduated.”

All fun and games aside, the Hubers have faced their share of challenges. In 1939, Lola was diagnosed with spinal meningitis and underwent two spinal fusions. “I didn’t have any problems with my back until I was in my 50s,” Lola said, “But now the fusions are giving out, and there’s nothing that can be done. I started walking with a cane, then a walker and now I’m in a wheelchair. Fortunately I’m not in any pain unless I’m standing up. But Shorty takes very good care of me – he even does most of the cooking now.”

“It’s the least I can do after she took such good care of me for over 40 years,” Shorty said. Whether camping, skiing or just hanging out with each other, one thing is for certain, the Hubers will find a way to have fun.
