Diana and Matias Menis

Diana was born in the U.S. but grew up in Venezuela, and Matias grew up in Argentina and was awarded a scholarship to play soccer at St. Gregory’s in Shawnee, OK. These two individuals from different countries met when working together at the “El Nacional” newspaper in Oklahoma City.

“When we met at the paper, I worked in the editorial department, and Diana worked on the sales team,” said Matias. “I was very impressed with her professionalism, charisma and beauty. Dating within the company was not encouraged – and I was her boss – so I kept my feelings to myself. She was very beautiful and had many men interested in her, so I just let a friendship happen. Eventually, a relationship developed slowly, but we had to keep it a secret. A few months later, we got married and surprised everyone with the news.”

When Diana became pregnant with the first of two children, the couple attended Family Expectations, a local organization that helps couples expecting a child. “Family Expectations was wonderful,” said Diana. “It was such a help to our marriage and our family. Even though it’s been a few years, we still use the things we learned there, like communication skills, every day.”

One of the challenges the Menises have faced as parents is raising their children in a bi-cultural family. “What Americans probably don’t realize is that while it’s true that we are both Hispanic, Matias and I come from very different cultures. Argentina and Venezuela are completely different countries with their own unique holidays, foods… very different from each other,” explains Diana. “So, we are teaching our children to be bi-cultural, and I suppose to an extent, tri-cultural when you consider American culture as well.”

Matias and Diana now own Fiesta Deportiva Media which produces a sports magazine, television show and website. “The other challenge in our marriage has been working together in our business. Time management and personal space is always a big issue because we have had to learn to juggle running a business with managing a relationship and growing a family with two children,” explains Diana. “Not to mention that I’m finishing my degree right now. But, while it’s a crazy time for us, one of the advantages of owning your own business – and working from home – is that we can take a few moments away from work if needed and play with the kids or take them for a walk just for a break and then get back to work.”

The Menises are a young couple but have quickly become well-respected and admired in the Oklahoma City Hispanic community. They are mentors to numerous couples and continue to pass on what they’ve learned about building a strong foundation for a lasting marriage to others.
